Trend Watch: Color-block(ed)

So apparently, "colorblock(ed)" is a thing... (the industry has bad grammar. it should be two words. *scowl) They did it on project runway so OF COURSE we have to be inundated with it now. I'm thoroughly unimpressed. Color block just reminds me of the 80's and I'm too young to be nostalgic about it and too old to think it's a cool new thing.

Here are a few options I've found that actually look pretty good. (I'm trying to be positive here =P)

For some reason, I find color blocking
 less offensive with a peplum
Not technically a color block, but a
bold solid graphic color that is lovely

on clearance. apparently teal
color block was a thing this summer.

This is one of the more successful attempts I've seen

A bit summery, but quite lovely

though done with lace, I still consider this a color block

also available in navy/black and gray/black

this one is my favorite

1930's Fashion Finds

The key things that I look for when trying to evoke the iconic 1930's style are

1. flat, pointed, and fitted waist lines, accompanied by a loose fitting skirt or slack
2. scooped or V'd collars, preferably with buttons and/or pleating details
3. length of skirts & dresses should be at or below the knee
4. fabric patterns in bold vintage graphics
5. braceleted or puffed sleeves

Remember! It's all about *how* you combine the pieces. A blouse may have the perfect fabric and neckline, but an awful sleeve, so put it under a jacket. Finish with a belt or bracelet and scarf. Don't forget to wear camisoles under gauzy blouses. And, I like to drop both my hem, and my neckline. This is the 10's after all... ;)

Style Inspiration

About once every other season, I get the urge to reinvent myself. Over the last few years I have gone from Industrial>Rocker>Rockabilly>Pin Up. These days, I'm leaning more toward old school Hollywood Vintage glamour.

My favorite decade is quickly becoming the 1930's. The high waist lines and bold prints have me giddy with excitement.

In my search for inspiration, I came across this wonderful collection of vintage Vogue images: My Vintage Vogue
Specifically their 1930's Gallery

Could you just die?

So, my project for today is to create an inspiration sheet and try to find modern items that are representative of this era.

Stay tuned!

The State of Fashion Update: PLAID

Heya kitty-cats,

I'm absolutely thrilled to report that plaid (yay) is "the thing" for fall! Retro fashion is taking a twist with influences from the Edwardian Era, ala Downton Abbey, and, dare I say, the growing popularity of the Steampunk genre?

I absolutely love fall colors, plaid, wool, scarves, big socks and boots...  I'm drooling just thinking about it. Warm fuzzy sweaters, corduroy jackets, tweed skirts, high waisted pants... la sigh. So much to love! And, with our powers combined, we can OWN this look. I would love to see photos of your ensembles. I'll be posting my own soon!

Dress Barn took home the gold in this category. Here are just a few of their Autumn gems~

Torrid has yet to catch on, but with a little imagination, I managed to dig up a few things~

Grey Chambray Ruffle Military Jacket

Taupe Buckle Luna Wedge Boots

Plaid Chiffon Bow Button-Up Top
Twist Tees - Ivory Foxy Cami

Note: I would not personally wear the plaid chiffon top over a bra and jeans (maybe I'm getting too old to shop at T?). I *would* wear it over a camisole (at right), tucked into a skirt, perhaps paired w/a sweater or jacket.

Lane Bryant's site recently got a makeover... and they had a few things I couldn't stop myself from buying~

Corduroy military blazer

Corduroy blazer
(also available in black and teal)

Side zip buckle boot
18" calf

Braid wrapped short boot

Boudoir Lace Dress by Kiyonna*

Plaid suit jacket

great staple pieces, *wear separately...

Note: LB's site now looks suspiciously like ashleystewart.com, and they seem to be selling some of kiyonna.com's products. I LOVE that they have this "real curves" thing, with customer uploaded images, that include dress size and measurements. AWESOME.

Happy Shopping!

Aug 31, 2011

miss me?

hi!

i can't even remember the last time i wrote something here. i started taking classes at community college, and between working, commuting, yoga, belly dance, homework and research for a potential business venture i have had, quite literally, no time.

i have done lots of shopping of course! (always time for that) i recently discovered that i look good in beige, and have purchased a couple of dresses and tops. i had to learn how to wash clothes that were a color other than black, gray or red, which was kinda funny. i am trying very hard not to be afraid of color and so far shades of beige, tan and taupe are the farthest i've gotten. i am still having an illicit affair with gray. i own something purple now, but it needs tailoring and i have yet to wear it.

this past weekend i went to a clothing swap for sizes 12+, which was pretty awesome. i got three dresses, a lovely embroidered skirt, yoga pants and a crochet sweater for only $47. then my awesome friend that wears about the same size i do, had me over to go through her bin of clothing swap clothes and i scored even more awesome scwag! skirts and tops galore! so for almost nothing i have an entirely new wardrobe and i feel fresh and wonderful.

but now i'm on a shopping kick! *sigh* i recently purchased these three items from Torrid (i'm going to Scottish Highland Games this weekend and, ya know, single girl + men in kilts = potential for gooood times)

cute, no?

but, what i really wanted to talk about was a site i found today. tired of looking at the same 'ol same 'ol from the same 'ol stores and the same 'ol fit problems and the same 'ol overpriced poor quality and wanting things that are chic and modern and fit well, i basically just googled "where to buy chic clothing" and started scrolling through the results.

what did i find? City Chic Online, plus size women's clothing and ladies fashion sizes 14+. and ya know what ladies? their sizes are adjusted accordingly. XS is a 14. S is a 16. and so on.

They have free shipping and free shipping for returns. If you sign up for an account you get a coupon code for 30% off of your first purchase.

i bought a pair of jeans, a top and a jacket. i figured i would order a variety of things so that i could test out the fit, and hopefully order more. here's what i got -

i rarely wear denim, because i have such trouble with fit. the rise on these looks good and they appear to be curvy enough. i'm hoping they are generous in the thighs. *crosses fingers*

anyway, i will update once i receive my items and let you know how they fit, the quality and the customer service, including shipping speed.

please leave a comment if you have had any experience with this shop. i can't believe i didn't know it existed! i have high hopes.

xoxo my beauties
